    I Didn’t Know

For all the regular readers — both of them — wondering what’s prompted the past week of short bursts of happy posts, a hint. It’s about as subtle as a bowling ball and not nearly so good as it should be, but for what it’s worth, it is earnest. Further details, alas, are embargoed for a short while.

(An aside: It is surprisingly hard to rhyme “breath” without dragging in the morbid. I didn’t pull it off.)

    “I Didn’t Know”
    2008 July 29

    Dropped from a height appalling
    Tumbling down in darkest night
    I didn’t know that I was falling
Until your laughter gave me flight

    Stumbling through days gone lightless
At the place the last star dies
    I didn’t know that I was sightless
Until your smile opened my eyes

    Deeper than deepest sounding
Sinking with the weight of death
    I didn’t know that I was drowning
Until your kisses gave me breath

Lost in a world of needing.
No idea of where to start,
    I didn’t know that I was bleeding
Until your touch repaired my heart

Ears deafened to my own crying
Soul weighed down with woe and strife
    I didn’t know that I was dying
Until your love gave back my life.

You’re right. Subtle as a bowling ball, or perhaps some sort of anvil. :-)

(Apropos of nothing, I’ll be passing through lovely Princeton to give a talk in the third week of October - are you going to be around?)

Hey, I never claimed a Frank Herbetesque skill for subtlety or intrigue. :)
